Ailettes (an old type of paulrons) are a really nice piece of equipment for a XIII Century knight, but they are quite rare to see worn by reenactors. That's why I decided to make a pair for myself! I'm not sure how effective they may be in providing protection to the shoulders, but I used them in battle and they didn't cause me any problem Materials: plywood, leather, canvas and acrylic paint.
Aye, I read about this hypotesis but I decided to make them "battle ready" anyway. Better to have some extra protection (though virtually useless), rather than something just for display! Thanks for the comment, glad you like them!
Thanks a lot, I'm fairly proud of them, even though curved shields are much easier to make than the lenticular ones, which I suppose are made using a steam press or some other mystical arcane knowledge!
Well, that's not always true... I met some people trying to convince ME that my falchion was actually a turkish scimitar, or other guys looking for some American Indian reenactment stuff around our pavilion tent! (true stories!!) But, hey: I'm a reenactor! That's the life I've chosen: fight all day, party all night, and argue with the audience! Sure you know what I'm talking about
Arguing with the audience? I wish! I'm constantly beset by fellow re-enactors commenting on my not-quite-the-right-period shoes and such. You know the type: fat, 50+ almost-retired, money-to-burn, I-only-order -specially-made-stuff-by-expensive artisans...
I had a guy looking down on me for having 'the wrong shield' while he was a Roman, wearing un-riveted mail. Mine was riveted, HA!
The right italian word for such people is "cagacazzi", but it's not very polite It seems it doesn't matter which historical period you reenact: reenactment is anyway our sweetest delight and yet our greatest sorrow! Somebody should definitely draw a demential comic-strip series on this

I like your shields too..vey well done.
Ah, one more thing... crusarers rock!!
People keep thinking my Iron Age Germanocelt is a medieval peasant....
The crusader outfit is very awesome, indeed.

Sono proprio contento del risultato, danno un'aria veramente da tardo XIII secolo
